The dental implant step-by-step procedure is explained in detail so that you know what to expect during your implant surgery.
If you have one or more missing teeth, replacing them with dental implants will help you regain your smile and ability to chew food normally. Unfortunately, many people avoid getting dental implants simply because they are unaware of the procedure and afraid it may be painful. The fact is that dental implant surgery at Dentakay is a painless and straightforward procedure. So, by understanding the step-by-step procedure of implant surgery, one can allay their fears and get the most out of implant therapy.
In the following sections, we will discuss the steps of implant surgery in detail so that you don’t have any surprises during your treatment.
Clinical examination and treatment planning
The first step in getting implants is a detailed clinical examination by our implant dentists. They will examine all your teeth and evaluate the status of the underlying bone. They will also not down the number of missing teeth and evaluate the digital study models and x-ray images of your teeth and jawbone. This will allow us to prepare a customized treatment plan detailing the precise number and location of implants needed to replace missing teeth. Also, depending on the number of your missing teeth, our implant dentists will suggest a suitable prosthesis, such as a zirconia crown, a removable denture, or a fixed complete partial denture.
Implant insertion
At the next appointment, our implant dentists will place the implants in the jawbone. We will prepare a surgical template that allows our dentists to place the implants precisely at pre-determined locations.
First, we will make an incision over the soft tissues to expose the underlying jawbone. Next, we will drill holes in the bone tissue at sites where implant insertion has been planned using the surgical template. Next, we will screw each implant into position using controlled forces.
Placing the healing collars
Once the implants are in position, we will place healing collars over them. These healing collars protect the underlying implants and ensure uninterrupted healing of the surgical site. Afterward, the soft tissues will be sutured back into position.
Healing of the Surgical Site
At Dentakay, we typically do not load implants with prostheses immediately after their placement. Instead, we allow the site to heal for about 4-6 months. This ensures optimal contact between the implants and the bone tissue. As a result, the implants become firmly embedded and provide a robust foundation for the artificial teeth they support. However, to ensure that you don’t remain without teeth, we will place a temporary restoration over the implants. But these prostheses are only for aesthetic purposes and cannot be used for chewing.
Placing the abutment
Once the implants have fused with the bone tissue, we will place an abutment over them. An abutment is a small piece that connects an implant with the prosthesis. To place an abutment, we will reopen the soft tissues to expose the implant. Afterward, the soft tissues are sutured back around the abutment. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia.
Implant loading
We will wait about two weeks for the soft tissues to heal before the final prosthesis is attached to the implants. This process is known as implant loading. During this process, we will replace the temporary restoration with the permanent one. In some cases, implant loading can also be done at the time of implant insertion – a process called immediate implant loading – however, it is not done routinely.
Congratulations! You are now a proud owner of a beautiful smile. Thanks to dental implants, you can eat all your favorite foods and speak normally.

What to Expect After the dental implants Process?
Whether you get your implants placed in a one- or two-stage procedure, you may experience some of the following discomforts associated with implant surgery.
- Swelling – minor, transient swelling of the gums and face. Placing an ice pack over the affected side of the face can help minimize the swelling and inflammation.
- Pain – you may also experience some pain after the procedure after the effect of the anesthesia wears off. But don’t worry; we will prescribe pain medication to keep you pain-free.
- Minor Bleeding – sometimes, minor bleeding may occur at the surgical site; it is nothing to worry about. However, if the bleeding persists, you should contact us immediately to get it checked.
