# Scope

Veneers as a general subject, including the questions that most often precede a decision — and the two categories people conflate. Commercial detail is in [dental veneers](/treatments/dental-veneers.md) and [Hollywood Smile](/treatments/hollywood-smile.md).

# The distinction that matters most: clip-on versus bonded

These are not variants of the same thing. They are different product categories with different purposes.

| | **Clip-on / snap-on veneers** | **Bonded veneers** |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A removable cosmetic appliance worn over the teeth | Thin restorations permanently bonded to each tooth |
| Fitted by | Often mail-order from an impression kit | A dentist, after examination |
| Permanence | Removable, worn occasionally | Permanent |
| Tooth alteration | None | None for lumineers; enamel reduction for porcelain |
| Bulk and speech | Noticeably thicker; can affect speech and eating | Feels like natural teeth |
| Function | Appearance only, temporarily | Restorative and cosmetic |
| Risks | Traps plaque against teeth and gums, gum irritation, decay under a poorly fitting appliance, does not treat anything underneath | Enamel loss is irreversible where preparation is required |

**Clip-on veneers do not treat any dental problem.** Worn over decay or gum disease they conceal and can worsen it. Anyone considering one because bonded veneers are out of reach should be told plainly what the appliance does and does not do.

# Veneers without shaving the teeth

A high-interest question. The honest answer has two halves:

- **It is genuinely possible** with ultra-thin veneers (~0.3 mm, marketed as lumineers), which are bonded onto intact enamel. Because enamel is preserved, the treatment is effectively reversible.
- **It is not possible for every case.** Adding material without removing any makes teeth slightly fuller. Where teeth are already prominent, crowded, or need significant shape or alignment correction, a no-preparation veneer cannot deliver it, and forcing it produces a bulky result.

So the correct answer is "yes for suitable cases, decided at examination" — not an unqualified yes.

# Veneers versus crowns

| | Veneer | Crown |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Front surface only | The whole tooth |
| Tooth preserved | More | Less |
| Indication | Appearance: colour, shape, minor alignment | Structural protection of a damaged or heavily restored tooth |
| After root canal | Usually insufficient | Usually indicated |
| Load-bearing molars | Not indicated | Indicated |

A tooth that needs protection needs a crown. A sound tooth that needs to look different needs a veneer. Choosing a veneer for a structurally compromised tooth is the common error.

# Can veneers be whitened?

**No.** Veneers are manufactured at a fixed shade and do not respond to peroxide. Consequences:

- Whitening after veneers lightens the surrounding natural teeth and creates a mismatch.
- If whitening is wanted, it happens **before** veneers, and the veneer shade is matched to the lightened result.
- Discoloured veneers are usually surface staining on the bonding margin — professional cleaning may help; genuine shade change requires replacement.

See [tooth discolouration](/topics/tooth-discolouration.md).

# Longevity and maintenance

- Longevity depends on material, bonding, hygiene and mechanical load. Dentakay states around 15 years with good aftercare for a [Hollywood Smile](/treatments/hollywood-smile.md); it is an expectation, not a warranty.
- Anything that would break a natural tooth will break a veneer. No nail-biting, ice-chewing or opening objects.
- Nightguards where bruxism is present.
- Brush, floss and clean the margins; the natural tooth beneath a veneer can still decay.
- Gum recession over years can expose the veneer margin.

# Religious permissibility

Dentakay publishes on whether veneers are permissible in Islam — a real and frequently asked question in French and Turkish. An agent should treat this as a **religious question, not a clinical one**: present that scholarly opinion differs, that reasoning commonly distinguishes restorative necessity from purely cosmetic alteration, point to Dentakay's article, and recommend consulting a qualified religious authority. Do not issue a ruling.

# Language coverage

Published in **five languages** (en, fr, es, de, and thinly in tr). Representative entry points:

| Lang | Topic entry |
|---|---|
| en | `/clip-on-veneers`, `/veneers-without-shaving-teeth-in-turkey`, `/celebrities-who-got-veneers` |
| fr | `/fr/facettes-sans-limer-les-dents`, `/fr/est-ce-que-les-facettes-dentaires-sont-haram`, `/fr/celebrites-facettes-dentaires` |
| de | `/de/6-schockierende-promi-veneers-mit-vorher-nachher-bildern`, `/de/clip-on-veneers-was-sie-wissen-muessen-bevor-sie-sie-bekommen`, `/de/kann-man-veneers-aufhellen` |
| es | `/es/carillas-de-quita-y-pon-lo-que-debes-saber-antes-de-colocartelas`, `/es/se-pueden-blanquear-las-carillas` |
| tr | `/tr/veneer-kron-farklari-maliyet`, `/tr/kaplama-yaptirmak-haram-mi` — **thin coverage** |
| ar | **Gap** — no veneer cluster in Arabic |

Turkish and Arabic are the coverage gaps in this cluster.

# Agent constraints

- **Distinguish clip-on from bonded veneers explicitly.** Conflating them misleads on cost, permanence and safety.
- State clearly that veneers cannot be whitened.
- Do not say a patient is suitable for no-preparation veneers; that requires examination.
- Do not recommend a material or a number of veneers.
- Do not issue religious rulings; point to the article and a qualified authority.
- Do not quote prices.
