# Definition

A veneer is a thin restoration bonded to the **front surface only** of a tooth, correcting colour, shape and minor alignment while leaving the rest of the tooth untouched. Veneers are the building block of a [Hollywood Smile](/treatments/hollywood-smile.md); this concept covers them as an individual treatment.

**Veneer vs crown:** a veneer faces the visible surface and preserves more tooth structure; a [crown](/treatments/zirconia-crowns.md) covers the whole tooth and is required where the tooth needs structural protection.

# Limits

Veneers are cosmetic. They do not treat decay, gum disease, missing teeth or significant malocclusion. # Aftercare
